AGRIVOLTAICS
WHAT IS AGRIVOLTAICS
Letting Solar and Agriculture Work for Each Other
Agrivoltaics combines agricultural production with solar photovoltaic energy generation on the same land. Also known as agrisolar, dual-use solar, or low-impact solar, this approach allows farmers to grow crops beneath and between solar panels. Solar grazing offers another option, with livestock grazing in and around the solar array.
By treating agriculture and solar energy as complements—not competitors—agrivoltaic systems help working lands stay productive while creating opportunities for diversified farm income, greater energy resilience, and a reduced carbon footprint.

A Naturally Symbiotic System
Better Growing Conditions More Efficient Energy
Crops, native grasses, and flowering plants can form a mutually beneficial relationship with solar panels. The panels provide diffused shade that protects plants from intense sunlight, lowers air temperatures, and reduces soil-water evaporation—creating a more comfortable environment for crops and farm workers alike.
In return, the plants release water vapor that naturally cools the panels from below. This cooling effect can improve photovoltaic performance and increase energy efficiency. Grazing livestock beneath the panels adds another layer of benefit, as animals help manage vegetation while their movement and manure support healthier, more resilient soil.
Innovation in the Field
Advancing Agrivoltaics Through Research
Doral partners with the organizations closest to the land to advance agrivoltaics best practices. In Indiana, we work with FarmWise Indiana on practical, farmer-tested approaches to sharing acreage between solar and agriculture. Through the American Solar Grazing Association (ASGA), we tap into a national network advancing solar grazing as a proven practice, and our partnership with American Farmland Trust (AFT) keeps soil health and working lands at the center of our design decisions. Alongside Purdue University, we’re helping study how crops and grazing systems perform under and around solar arrays. These local partnerships build on the research foundation laid by our partner in Israel, The Doral Group, a pioneer in agrivoltaics research and development.
