Mammoth North Solar

Mammoth North Solar is the first phase of the Mammoth Solar complex, one of the largest solar developments in the United States. The facility generates 400 MW of energy, enough to power approximately 75,000 households, making it the largest solar facility – and one of the largest energy-generating facilities of its kind – in the state. Mammoth North was Doral’s first project to reach commercial operations.

About Mammoth North Solar

Once fully built, the full Mammoth Solar complex will generate 1.3 GW of energy, powering approximately 275,000 households annually across Starke and Pulaski Counties in Northwest Indiana. The project takes its name from ancient mammoth bones ( hyperlinked – Mastodon skulls, homemade beer, and the largest solar project in America: A Mammoth update) discovered in the fields where it now stands, as well as the scale and ambition of the development itself.

Project History

Mammoth Solar began in 2019 as a grassroots effort, built around conversations in the homes and barns of local farmers. Today, more than 65 families lease their land to Doral Renewables as part of the project.

In May 2021, we signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with AEP Energy, a subsidiary of American Electric Power and one of the largest electric energy wholesale and retail suppliers in the United States. Construction on Mammoth North began in March 2022, and by June 2022 Doral had reached financial close on the project. Mammoth North became operational in October 2024.

Project Outcome

Today, Mammoth North is home not only to solar modules and energy production but also to a herd of more than 2,000 sheep, alongside kunekune pigs, donkeys, alpacas, and dogs; all part of the project’s vegetation management team, grazing the land and keeping it well maintained. The site is one of the largest agrivoltaic deployments in the country, supporting local farmers as they sustain and grow their agricultural operations alongside solar generation.
